Out of the barrel and onto the sill!

There’s something bold and daring about aging beer in barrels, because it takes an incredible amount of patience and skill. You have to be able to brew the perfect beer, and then just sit on it for months at a time. No touching! Not only that, but you then have to act quickly to get the beer out of the barrels when it’s ready. Too late or too soon, and it will all be for naught. Even if you do all of this perfectly, it’s still a beer that a lot of people will shy away from because of its intense bourbon flavor.

Founders Brewing Company made Frootwood by aging a light-bodied cherry ale in barrels that previously held not just bourbon, but also maple syrup. The resulting combination of the bourbon, cherry and maple syrup flavors is unique, to say the least, and completely unforgettable. The sweetness is apparent, but the oakey bourbon really comes through strong. The Frootwood won’t be for everyone, but if you’re into barrel-aged brews, this one should be on the top of your wish list.

There’s plenty more of Founders’ barrel-aged series on our Instagram!
