Get your fishing poles ready, we’re looking for sculpin on the window sill today.

The Sculpin IPA is a staple of Ballast Point Brewing Company‘s beer lineups. They call their “trophy beer,” because it won them a gold medal. The original recipe calls for hopping the beer at five different stages of brewing, and the brewery is very proud of this one. So proud, in fact, that they keep making different versions of it. What we have on the window sill today, is the limited release unfiltered version. It’s the fifth overall version of the sculpin released by BP (original, grapefruit, pineapple and habanero are the others).

The unfiltered version is different for two reasons: 1, it’s unfiltered, as you might imagine. 2, it’s packed with extra hops during brewing, which basically makes this beer the superhero version of its base beer. Apricot, mango, citrus and hops-aided-bitter goodness make up the flavor-palate for this one, and the unfiltered haze gives it a delicious color. The visuals, nose and taste all mesh perfectly, making for a great drinking experience. Can’t wait to have the rest of the sculpins on the sill.
