Evil Twin is back on the window sill… in a sidecar!

Before I bought this beer, I had no idea what Umami was. It’s also known as savory, the fifth basic taste (along with sweetness, sourness, bitterness and saltiness). It was “discovered” by Japanese scientist Kikunae Ikeda in 1908, but it wasn’t accepted by general science until 1985. I won’t get too deep into the science, but it’s described as brothy, or meaty.

Why am I telling you this? Because Evil Twin Brewing’s Sumo In A Sidecar, an apricot-flavored IPA, also contains a “slim hint” of umami. Not really sure what this means for the beer. Did they brew it with some seaweed? A big ol’ soup bone? No clue. It does add another element to an already juicy and tasty IPA, though. I thought the floaties were a little too much (you can’t really see them in this photo, but they were everywhere), but the beer tasted good. I’d have it again.
