If you’re going to understand the Coriolis, you have to understand the Nelson Sauvin hop. The “Nelson,” is the sole hop used in this beer, and is named in honor of the Sauvignon Blanc grape, to which many people say it has a similar smell and taste. Most big name breweries stay away from this New Zealand hop variety, as they consider it to be “too wild.”
Craft brewers, especially the more experimental ones, don’t mind rolling the dice with it, though. It’s known for its smooth bittering quality, and is rich and fruity–perfect for an American Double / Imperial IPA. Like the dinosaur on the can art, New England Brewing Company‘s Corliois’ ABV will take a bite out of you if you aren’t careful. That being said, it’s not overly bitter, or anything else for that matter. Very subtle. Very tasty. Makes me want to head to the Woodbridge, CT brewery to get some more!
