It’s gonna be a Bright (Citra), Bright (Citra), sunshiny day on the Windowsill!

I like when a brewery has the confidence in its recipes to not worry about playing around with them. Knowing the malt base for the Bright series is solid, Tree House Brewing Company has released several varieties of this (mostly) single-hop brew. Several months ago, I was lucky enough to try the Mosaic version, and there have also been others: Nelson, Simcoe & Amarillo, Galaxy, Baby Bright (a more session-able Bright) and the BBBright (a hopped up version of the Mosaic original).

Today, we have another of the Brights on the sill—the Citra. Like the others, it’s created with a simple malt bill and fermented with ale yeast. Like most Citra brews, this Bright is all about the citrus aromas and flavors. Orange juice, grapefruit, tangerine… you name it. Soft finish with decent bitters from the hops. Really bright and delicious!

Still going strong with Tree House Week on the Windowsill!

Once upon a time, Tree House Brewing Company made a beer called the Alter Ego, an American IPA brewed with Mosaic and Amarillo hops. It was a very solid IPA, but it needed to be “doubled” up to an Imperial version.

That’s where the Doppelgänger comes in. More Mosaic. More Amarillo. Kettle and dry hopped. More deliciousness, too. It’s juicy, dank, citrusy and mean. You’ll definitely want more than one. So good! Make sure you try this one, the Alter Ego and the even more hopped up version… The Doubleganger.

Abracadabra! Hocus Pocus! Magic on the Windowsill today!

We’ve had stouts and plenty of pale ales—both the American and Indian varieties—from Tree House Brewing Company on the Windowsill this week, so I figured we’d try something new for this weekend bonus edition of Tree House Week. It’s a Geman pilsner, which is a style that originated in the Bohemian city of Pilsen in the 1840s. Aged in caves before the advent of refrigerators in the early 20th century, the classic style is still found all over the world. Great for a change of pace!

Hold onto your butts, but the Trail Magic wasn’t my favorite brew. I think it’s just because I’m more of a stouts and IPAs kind of fella, though. As far as pilsners go, this was a pretty solid one. Solid malt base with a good balance of hops, and even some spice to counteract that dry finish. Very clean, very crisp. Solid pilsner… if you like that kind of thing.

I bet you’re green with envy about what’s on my Windowsill today!

Corny jokes aside, it’s almost inexcusable that I haven’t had this Tree House Brewing Company classic on my sill yet. According to the official description, the Green is a favorite of the crew at the brewery. With all the incredible beer they make there, I’d say that’s very impressive.

Why is it so good? Maybe it’s the hop combination. Although they don’t reveal the exact combo, I do know that the recipe includes hops from America and Australia. It’s “intensely” hopped—in the kettle and dry—giving it huge notes of lemon-lime, orange, tangerine and pineapple. It’s also got some solid bitterness on the finish and the mouthfeel is really rich and smooth. The key to this beer is balance. It’s delicious, and green enough for Yoda!

It’s always fun to have a lookalike on the sill!

A few weeks ago, my wife and I took a trip to Boston. On the way home, we hit up Trillium Brewing Company and Tree House Brewing Company—two of the best breweries in New England. The new facilities at the latter are some of the most beautiful in the industry. Although we had to wait in line for about 90 minutes, I came home with more beer than I could carry, and with a big ol’ dent in my wallet. Completely worth it!

According to Tree House, the Doubleganger was conceived with the intent to push the concept of their Doppelganger, which we’ve had on the Windowsill before—to its limits. They increased the kettle and dry hopping rates, while keeping the base the same. The Doubleganger delicious, with notes of mango, citrus and tropical fruit. Very hoppy, but really well-balanced. Amazing!

There’s a storm brewing on the Windowsill today!

Like any good brewery worth its salt, Tree House Brewing Company is always innovating on its recipes. The Super Typhoon—one of the highlights of the available beers when I visited the brewery—is a hopped up version (pun intended) of another great Tree House beer, the Hurricane. I haven’t had the hurricane, but if it’s half as good as the Super Typhoon, I’m sure it’s great too.

The Super Typhoon takes the Citra and Simcoe hop bill from the Hurricane and kicks it up a couple of notches. The resulting beer was well worth the 90-minute wait in line. The tropical and passion fruit flavors blend really well with a creamy body to create a pretty fantastic experience. It’ll hit your throat like a great big storm of aromas and flavors, too. I loved it!

Today’s brew truly is a work of art!

I’m a big fan of expressionist art. The style is defined as one in which the artist seeks to “express emotional experience rather than impressions of the external words.” Think of ‘The Scream’ by Edvard Munch. Expressionism might not be for everyone, but I love it. It would seem that the folks at Tree House Brewing Company do too, because they use it to name their incredibly kickass new brew.

The Expressionism is an imperial stout brewed with chocolate, roasted and brown malts. It’s actually the second installment of a new line of dark beers being put out this fall and winter by Nate and the Tree House Crew. That malt backbone is serious, but doesn’t overpower the notes of cocoa powder, dark candy sugar, caramel and dark fruit. I really loved this. Perfect brew for Stout Season.

We’re definitely not sleeping on the Windowsill today!

Robert Frost (1874-1963) was one America’s greatest poets. In 1922, after spending all night writing a poem named ‘New Hampshire,’ he took a few moments and wrote one of his most famous works of all time. That poem, ‘Stopping by Woods on A Snowy Evening,’ is about a traveler who stops to admire the snow while making his way through the woods. It contains this famous stanza: “The woods are lovely, dark and deep / But I have promises to keep / And miles to go before I sleep / And miles to go before I sleep.” Appropriate for Stout Season, I think!

Like those woods in the poem, the Miles To Go Before I Sleep is oh so lovely with its dark, deep color. It’s brewed with lots of roasted malts, lactose, peanut butter and chocolate. It’s robust, sweet and malty—one of the best stouts I have ever had. Tree House Brewing Company’s Nate Lanier says he brewed this imperial milk stout for his wife, Lauren, because she loves peanut butter cups, and he loves her, and “she deserves the world.” What a guy! I want their marriage to last forever, because everything he brews in her honor is incredibly delicious!

There’s something comforting about seeing a light on the Windowsill when you come home.

Lights On was brewed for a very special reason. Before moving to their current gigantic facility in Charlton, Tree House Brewing Company were based at a 10,000 square foot brewhouse in Monson. The Lights On was brewed to celebrate the opening of that Monson location. Prior to that, Nate Lanier was brewing in a 550-square-foot garage. With Lights On, they wanted a beer that represented everything Tree House was, is, and will be. They did a great job.

This beer definitely turned my lights on. From the beautiful can art designed by @keever, to the improbably even more beautiful color, this American Pale Ale is a real eye catcher. All that haze hints at the hoppy nature of the brew, and it doesn’t disappoint the nose or the tongue. Tropical, citrusy, delicious juicy goodness. Loved this brew! Truly enlightening.

I hereby promise to love Tree House Brewing Company… in perpetuity.

It’s awesome when a beer has a great backstory, and In Perpetuity has one that comes from a place of love. On the eve of his one-year anniversary, head brewer Nate Lanier, brewed a beer for his wife Lauren (aka Tree House L-Dog). He wanted it to represent “foreverness—in love, passion and regardless of circumstance.”

So, is this brew a good sign for the future of their union? If the marriage of Citra and Nelson hops has anything to say about it, YES! I loved the In Perpetuity. It’s hazy, bright and tropical, with lots of strong citrus flavors in the backbone. So delicious, it made me want to say “I do.”
