It’s gonna be a Bright (Citra), Bright (Citra), sunshiny day on the Windowsill!

I like when a brewery has the confidence in its recipes to not worry about playing around with them. Knowing the malt base for the Bright series is solid, Tree House Brewing Company has released several varieties of this (mostly) single-hop brew. Several months ago, I was lucky enough to try the Mosaic version, and there have also been others: Nelson, Simcoe & Amarillo, Galaxy, Baby Bright (a more session-able Bright) and the BBBright (a hopped up version of the Mosaic original).

Today, we have another of the Brights on the sill—the Citra. Like the others, it’s created with a simple malt bill and fermented with ale yeast. Like most Citra brews, this Bright is all about the citrus aromas and flavors. Orange juice, grapefruit, tangerine… you name it. Soft finish with decent bitters from the hops. Really bright and delicious!

Still going strong with Tree House Week on the Windowsill!

Once upon a time, Tree House Brewing Company made a beer called the Alter Ego, an American IPA brewed with Mosaic and Amarillo hops. It was a very solid IPA, but it needed to be “doubled” up to an Imperial version.

That’s where the Doppelgänger comes in. More Mosaic. More Amarillo. Kettle and dry hopped. More deliciousness, too. It’s juicy, dank, citrusy and mean. You’ll definitely want more than one. So good! Make sure you try this one, the Alter Ego and the even more hopped up version… The Doubleganger.

It’s always fun to have a lookalike on the sill!

A few weeks ago, my wife and I took a trip to Boston. On the way home, we hit up Trillium Brewing Company and Tree House Brewing Company—two of the best breweries in New England. The new facilities at the latter are some of the most beautiful in the industry. Although we had to wait in line for about 90 minutes, I came home with more beer than I could carry, and with a big ol’ dent in my wallet. Completely worth it!

According to Tree House, the Doubleganger was conceived with the intent to push the concept of their Doppelganger, which we’ve had on the Windowsill before—to its limits. They increased the kettle and dry hopping rates, while keeping the base the same. The Doubleganger delicious, with notes of mango, citrus and tropical fruit. Very hoppy, but really well-balanced. Amazing!

There’s a storm brewing on the Windowsill today!

Like any good brewery worth its salt, Tree House Brewing Company is always innovating on its recipes. The Super Typhoon—one of the highlights of the available beers when I visited the brewery—is a hopped up version (pun intended) of another great Tree House beer, the Hurricane. I haven’t had the hurricane, but if it’s half as good as the Super Typhoon, I’m sure it’s great too.

The Super Typhoon takes the Citra and Simcoe hop bill from the Hurricane and kicks it up a couple of notches. The resulting beer was well worth the 90-minute wait in line. The tropical and passion fruit flavors blend really well with a creamy body to create a pretty fantastic experience. It’ll hit your throat like a great big storm of aromas and flavors, too. I loved it!

There’s a big slab of dank on the Windowsill today!

I can’t stress it enough. I love Founders Brewing Company’s barrel-aged series. The brewery currently has over 20,000 filled barrels waiting to be released. They’re stored in former mines below the streets of Grand Rapids, as well as at an off-site storage facility named the Barrel House, which boasts more than two-square acres of refrigerated space… wowsers! The Dankwood was this year’s third BA release—after KBS and Backwoods Bastard and followed by Barrel Runner and the soon-to-be-released Curmudgeon’s Better Half. It did not disappoint.

Unlike some of the other barrel-aged releases for this year, the Dankwood is all-new for 2018. Founders took their beloved—and previously Windowsilled—ReDANKulous red IPA and stuck it in bourbon barrels. The result is a somewhat sweet, malty, boozy and complex bottle of deliciousness I really enjoyed. Also, I dropped the bottle from the top shelf of my fridge onto my tile floor, and it didn’t break. So… dank!

Tröegs Independent Brewing: Nimble Giant

After 16 months, we’ve finally found the Giant on the Windowsill today!

You know what I love about Hershey PA’s Tröegs Independent Brewing? No, it’s not the umlaut (although… it kind of is); it’s the fact that they pride themselves in supporting their community. They view the brewery as only one part of the Tröegs community, and they support local vendors, producers and causes they believe in. This means they sometimes hold tree planting events, or 5K races, and they try to use locally sourced hops and ingredients wherever possible. Keep that going!

The Nimble Giant is one of Tröegs’ most famous, and anticipated, yearly releases. It has dropped into cans and kegs every June since 2016, but this was my first time trying it. Let me tell you, this double IPA was worth the wait. It’s brewed with three top notch hops, Simcoe, Mosaic and Azacca. That’s only part of Tröegs’ “ingredients + people + process” beer-making formula. The people part comes from the innovative hopping technique they developed for this brew. They dubbed it Hop Cyclone, and it ensures that the hop oils get to every drop of beer in those tanks. The process? Tröegs found a small window of time during fermentation that optimizes the dry-hop additions. The Nimble Giant is truly a giant at 9% ABV, but the flavor profile from the hops and techniques shows how nimble Tröegs can be. Amazing!

My name ain’t Jonas, but I have a killer beer on the Windowsill for you today!

In case you haven’t figured it out, today’s SingleCut Beersmiths brew is named after a repeated line in “My Name is Jonas,” a hit song by from one of my favorite rock bands, Weezer. The song is off their self titled 1994 debut album (also known as The Blue Album), and was inspired by a situation lead singer Rivers Cuomo’s brother was having with insurance after a car crash. In the song, it seems like more of a construction problem—the song basically describes a construction crew deciding not to work, and going home—but whatever. Great tune! On the original version of this beer, the little man on the label is wearing a construction outfit, complete with a hard hat and orange vest. For the upgraded DDH version, we get the guy in the business suit. You fancy, huh?

Like just about everything else I’ve had from SingleCut, the Workers Are Going Home was pretty amazing. Although I don’t know the exact varieties, the double IPA uses hops from Australian, Pacific Northwest and new-age European hops. The dry-hopping is done with the mysterious Australian and European varieties. Lots of hops. Lots of juice. Solid ABV. The Workers Are Going Home is delicious. If I see it at my local shop again, I might use a dozer to clear a path to it. Go home and drink one for yourself!
